Hot Liquor Back
The Hot Liquor Back, or HLB is a large stainless-steel kettle, wood clad for insulation.
It heats up brewing liquor (water), to a temperature of 161 F with 2 large electric elements. This hot water is used for ‘Mashing’ (the process of mixing liquor with cracked malt to create a porridge type of mix). The sugars are extracted from the malt. ‘Spargeing’ liquor, is then sprayed over the mash to rinse through all the sugars to the Copper.
We have two HLB’s at Ballard’s
