At Ballards we only use whole grain barley, which has to be cracked so as to release all of its starchy contents in to the ‘mash’. We do this with the aid of a Bamford O,C,3 twin roller mill. You may know of the Bamford family, they produce the yellow J.C.B. diggers you see all over the place.
It was one of the last ones that they produced & has given us good service since.
We have fitted our two-roller mill half way between floors just above the Mash Tun. We have found this is the easiest way to mill our whole grain malt during mashing in. normally about 425 lb in 18 minutes.
